Το δεντρολίβανο το εκτιμούσαν ιδιαίτερα στην αρχαιότητα για τις θεραπευτικές του ιδιότητες.

Στην αρχαϊκή και αρχαία Ελλάδα το θεωρούσαν δώρο της θεάς Αφροδίτης στους ανθρώπους και το χρησιμοποιούσαν στις θυσίες ζώων- το έκαιγαν στους βωμούς. 

Θεωρείται σύμβολο ενθύμησης, ανάμνησης και δικαιοσύνης, καθώς πίστευαν ότι φυτρώνει μόνο στις αυλές των δίκαιων ανθρώπων.

Διακοσμούσαν με αυτό τα αγάλματα των θεών και οι μαθητές όταν μελετούσαν το χρησιμοποιούσαν σαν στεφάνι, χάρη στην ιδιότητά του να τονώνει τη μνήμη.

Αργότερα, κατά το μεσαίωνα, χρησιμοποιήθηκε και σε καλλυντικά σκευάσματα. Στην ιστορία αναφέρεται ένα ελιξίριο το οποίο κατασκευαζόταν κατόπιν απόσταξης δεντρολίβανου, κέδρου και τερεβινθίνης που μεταμόρφωσε μία παράλυτη 70χρονη πριγκίπισσα σε μια ελκυστική νεαρή κοπέλα τη οποία ζήτησε σε γάμο ο βασιλιάς τής Πολωνίας το 1370. Το ελιξίριο αυτό ονομάστηκε "Το νερό της βασίλισσας της Ουγγαρίας".

Οι Ρωμαίοι κρατούσαν πάντα ένα κλαράκι Δεντρολίβανου κατά την διάρκεια τελετών και θρησκευτικών εορτών, μιας και θεωρείτο πως εξασφαλίζει ευτυχισμένη ζωή και ειρήνη μετά θάνατο. Για τον Χριστιανισμό είναι ιερό φυτό και χρησιμοποιείται για τους αγιασμούς.

Μια πανάρχαια θεραπευτική συνταγή ενάντια στην δυσπεψία είναι η εξής: ένα κλαδί Δεντρολίβανο σε 1 λίτρο κρασί, αφήνεται για μερικές ώρες και χορηγείται σε μικρές δόσεις.

Rosemary is often linked to the Greek goddess Aphrodite, who in some versions of the myth is cloaked in the herb at the time of her birth.

Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of beauty, fertility, and love, was born from the foam of the sea after the Titan Cronos cut off his father Ouranos’ penis and threw it in the sea. She arrived ashore on a seashell, as Boticelli infamously painted in The Birth of Venus, her Roman goddess counterpart.

Rosemary is as strongly tied to the sea as Aphrodite; the herb grows along the coast of the Mediterranean and can survive simply on the moisture in the air that is brought from the sea by gusts of wind, hence its name Rosmarinus, which means “dew of the sea.”

The goddess of love and the mother of several children with various gods has also imparted attributes of an aphrodisiac and a fertility enhancer to rosemary.

The herb has also been thought to contain memory boosting powers, thus it has been associated with the Titaness Mnemosyne, the goddess of memory and the mother of the nine Muses.

Mnemosyne was thought to have given humans their capacity for memories, but at the time of their death, so as to ease their suffering in the underworld, would take all their memories by having them drink from Lethe, the river of forgetfulness.

Because of this association Greek scholars would wear wreaths of rosemary while taking exams so as to enhance their memory and improve their performance. Even to this day, students keep a sprig 

                   nearby and brides and grooms keep the herb close so as to not forget their vows.

Rosemary oil is known as a stimulating oil.  It is best when used early in the morning when for a kick start or an energy booster (instead of coffee, try a rosemary tea!).  Either put a few drops it into an oil burner/diffuser with water or better yet put a couple of drops on the floor of the shower, the steam will do the work.

Rosemary is the perfect oil for use when studying. It stimulates memory processes and alertness and enhances short and long term memory.

After a Hot Yoga Class, I use it for any aching, or after climbing on of Hong Kong’s’ upward hikes…

Poor circulation and low blood pressure can also be helped with rosemary oil baths, while bathing take many deep breaths!  This oil is also wonderfully combined with black pepper, orange, or cypress oil.

Rosemary as we all know brightens dull hair and helps balance oiliness. Add 10 drops to your full conditioner bottle.
